Elective Home Education (EHE)

What is Elective Home Education?

Elective Home Education is when a parent chooses to withdraw their children from a formal education e.g. school and educate them at home.

The Education Act 1996, Section 7, states that

The parent of every child of compulsory school age shall cause him to receive efficient full-time education suitable

(a) to his age, ability and aptitude and

(b) to any special educational needs he may have,

either by regular attendance at school or otherwise.

The use of the word otherwise, in this statement, means that parents have the right to educate their children at home if this is their choice.
