Becoming a childminder

What is a registered childminder?

Registered childminders work in their own homes caring for other peoples children for more than two hours a day, they are self-employed, and run their own business. Childminders offer children plenty of learning opportunities in a safe, stimulating environment.

Becoming a registered childminder gives you the chance of an incredibly rewarding and responsible career with all the benefits of home-based working.

As a registered childminder you will:

  • Offer the children you care for a happy and inspirational environment.
  • See the children that you care for grow and develop.
  • Work in your home, choosing the hours you work and the services you provide.
  • Have a career where no two days are the same.
  • Care for your own children at the same time if you have a family.
  • Meet other childminders in your area and get to know your local community.

The Early Years Foundation Stage sets the standards for learning, development and care for children from birth to the end of the foundation stage; providers on the Early Years Register must deliver the Early Years Foundation Stage (EYFS).

Many childminders belong to a local childminding group and some link to Children’s Centres. Some childminders choose to work together from the same address.
